Teamwork is crucial in Revelations 2, and having another person to play with makes a huge difference. In both pairings, one is the attacker and the other plays support. Claire and Barry “the Master of Unlocking” Burton handle the firearms, while Moira and Natalia can find items hidden in the environment and fight using melee weapons. It’s a nice contrast to RE6, where both players could easily drop dozens of enemies. Here, you really have to synergize with your partner in order to survive. Claire and Moira in particular can get into an effective rhythm where Claire guns down a zombie and Moira swoops in to deliver the coup de grâce with her crowbar.
You can freely switch between the characters when playing solo, but it’s far more enjoyable coordinating with a buddy. Like its predecessor, Revelations 2 places a heavy emphasis on ranged gunplay, as opposed to RE6’s zombie judo. You want to drop enemies quickly and efficiently with steady, well-placed headshots. Moira and Natalia can assist by blinding enemies with a flashlight or highlighting weak points, respectively. Zombie attacks hit hard, which keeps the encounters feeling tense and all the more rewarding when you emerge without a scratch.
Blasting your way through episode one’s story takes around two hours; however, that’s just the beginning. There are several incentives for replaying the story, such as the panic-inducing invisibility mode, which renders all enemies invisible unless Moira or Natalia points them out. It’s a fun and stressful mode that emphasizes Revelations 2’s focus on teamwork. However, Raid mode is the real time sink. It layers on a ton of new twists on top of the core gunplay, including freezing bullets, zombies with energy shields, dozens of new guns, and more. Combined with extensive customization options, Raid mode has a lot to offer.
Unfortunately, I did encounter a recurring glitch where Raid mode would lock up while on a loading screen, resulting in me having to restart the Xbox One. This happened a few times, and while I never lost any progress as a result, it was an occasional nuisance. That aside, Resident Evil: Revelations 2’s premiere episode wraps up a ton of content with a modest price tag. There’s plenty to keep you occupied until next week’s episode, by which point hopefully that Raid mode bug will be worked out.
